What’s So Important About Routine Dental Care?

What’s So Important About Routine Dental Care? When we are growing up most of us are only told that we need to brush our teeth to prevent cavities. Of course, at a young age, that is all we really need to know, because no child wants a cavity! However, as we get older, routine dental care is about more than just cavities. Periodontal, or gum, disease is the major cause of tooth loss among adults, and routine dental care helps to prevent us from developing gum disease. The same bacterial plaque that causes tooth decay, can lead to gingivitis (the earliest stage of gum disease) and eventually full-blown gum disease if not removed regularly. Regularly means, twice a day before it can calcify (harden) into tartar which can only be removed via a professional dental cleaning. That is why routine dental care is so important!

What it Entails

Routine dental care consists of homecare–which includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily–and bi-annual dental visits which consist of a dental exam and professional cleaning. Here at Councill Dental Group we provide a comprehensive dental examination which consists of monitoring your blood pressure, a periodontal evaluation, an analysis of your temporomandibular joints (your jaw joints) along with a bite analysis, an assessment of each individual tooth, an oral cancer screening using VELscope® technology, and–usually annually, unless otherwise warranted–digital X-rays. Digital X-rays provide several advantages, compared to traditional X-rays, which include the fact that they are more accurate, faster, and they reduce radiation exposure by 80 percent.

Treatment Plans

If problems are found, your dentist will discuss them with you, and together you will devise a treatment plan that meets your goals as well as fits into your time constraints and budget.
