A Few Words on Tooth Decay
Even if you practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing each day, you may still be susceptible to developing a cavity. Tooth decay occurs when bacteria breaks down the sugars and other starches left behind by the food and drinks we consume. As a result, the level of oral acids in the mouth increases and the teeth become coated with plaque buildup. This weakens the outer enamel, allowing bacteria to reach the sensitive layers of dentin below the surface causing a cavity to form. While cavities are a common problem, ignoring them can quickly lead to serious complications, including infections and potential for tooth loss. Fortunately, Dr. R. Terry Councill offers a conservative restorative treatment for addressing cavities with dental fillings.
In most cases, we will place a natural looking, tooth-colored filling made from a composite resin. However, some teeth may require the placement of silver or amalgam fillings, especially for the molars in the back of the mouth that may endure more powerful bite forces and require a stronger restoration. The type of filling placed will depend on a number of different factors that Dr. Councill will assess during your exam.
What to Expect During a Dental Filling Procedure?
If Dr. Councill or Dr. Glass locates a cavity during an examination, they will recommend placing a filling during the appointment. If a patient feels nervous or anxious, we may offer sedation dentistry to help him/her remain relaxed and calm. First, we will gently numb the site in stages to minimize discomfort and then remove all traces of decay. Next, we will thoroughly clean and disinfect the tooth. We will then fill the area with composite resin and allow it to harden. Finally, we will shape and polish the resin so it blends perfectly with your natural teeth and restores the function of your bite.
